April 23, St. George's Day

On Friday, poem corrections from Tuesday, corrections on these questions, Journal, Kahoots

St. George's Day is today. If you lived in Newfoundland, it would be a holiday from school. It is also a big deal in England, and this song is commonly played. The song is also the anthem of the Common Wealth Games.
Here in Winnipeg we have a school named after St. George. Several countries, including Britain, have St. George's cross on their flag. We will look at the legend.

Trigger Warning: The legend involves a dragon and a fair maiden in distress.

Above is the Golden version of the tale of St. George, which dates from the Middle Ages. Here is another version, the non-golden version, about what happened in Roman times.  This older version has no dragon or fair maiden, and George is imprisoned, tortured and executed by the Romans. Below is a more modern take on the legend by Robert Munch.

 1. Why would there be different versions of this legend and other legends? Think of at least 2 reasons.

 2. Which version of this legend do you like the best, and why.

3. Slaying dragons, in the Western World, has come to mean battling with evil. What dragon to you plan to slay?

  1. Sophia’s answers to 2&3, with a little humour.
    2. I like the one with the dragon, because having a dragon and a damsel in distress makes stories more interesting, especially when it comes to telling little kids a story.
    3. I’m planning to slay the dragon of procrastination. Someday

  3. 1. i think there people make these different ending to the stories because they don't want to tell a younger generation about something evil like a dragon that would eat people, that could scare them so they wrote a more kid friendly version of this story. i also think that some people just want to say i wrote that story, and they can give it their own little twist on the story. like the paper bag princess and the st.George story are very different but have a slimier concept.
2.i like both of them but if i had to choose one it would be the original. the reason i like the paper bag princess is because i remember reading it in grade 2, my friend and i had to make a puppet show on the story. but the original sounds more intense then a kids story. but as i was listening to the first story i was thinking about the paper bag princess.
    3. id slay a dead dragon so that i don't die.

  4. 1. Because different things appeal to different people so some people might like epic dragon fights while others like funny stories. Also, some people might not agree with the way that people used to think, such as men being better than women.
    2. I like the paper bag princess better because I'm not a fan of the whole "knights in shining armor" stuff.
    3. I would slay the two headed dragon of depression and anxiety because (not saying I have either of them) being sad and/or anxious sucks.

  8. 1.because diffrent people like diffrent stories and if you had just one story that nobody made a diffrent story of people could not like it for whatever reasons.

2.i like the 2nd one because i like robert munches storys

3.i would slay the dragon from the game skyrim because that dragon is kind of described like the dragon in the first story.

  9. 1. I think that there is more then one story because some people believe in different things and they wanted everyone to remember st. George so they gave people different options.
    2. I like the second version better because in this version the princess saves the prince instead of it being the other way around.
    3. I would slay the dragon of depression because it is a horrible thing and nobody deserves that.

  10. Bailey has left a new comment on your post "April 23, St. George's Day":

    1. I think they made different versions because people have different opinions on what they believe
I think they made different versions because people like to hear different ways the story could go.

    2. I like the one by Robert munch because it puts it in a more understanding form for people and can learn while reading.

3.I would slay the two headed dragon of depression and anxiety
