You are not alone.  Where you are things are probably pretty silent, unless you have chosen to boost the music, but you are not alone.  Silence and isolation can occur in a sea of noise and people and sometimes we are least alone when by ourselves.  We are having problems identifying personification, and you may be alone in a room, so . . . call someone older who is special in your life, read this poem to them; they might be able to help you with it.

The Sound Of Silence
By P.Simon

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence.

"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls."
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence

Hopefully your L.A. binder is right by your side, but if it happens to be in your locker or . . . , then click here for the notes we did in class.

Stanza 1
1. Identify the personification. Not enough to just give me a line, but tell me what the object is and how the object is being personified. Example, the object is a rock and the author says the rock can sing

2. New definition. Oxymoron: Contradictory terms that are used together. Examples Icy-Hot, bittersweet, weirdly normal, love to hate. What phrase in stanza 1 is an oxymoron?

Stanza 2
3. As in 1, identify a personification.

Stanza 3
4. Again, identify a personification.
5. In this crowd of people, are people alone? Defend your answer from the poem

Stanza 4
6. Identify a simile
7. Identify a metaphor

Stanza 5
8. My interpretation is that "the neon god they made" referred to in this song 50 years ago was the relatively new ways of communicating by television and other electrical ways such as store signs. To me, the poem is saying that all this increase of communication has just resulted in more noise and less meaningful connections. The author in stanza 4 tries to reach out, "take my arms that I might reach you" and tries to be listened to "hear my words that I might teach you," but without success. People have already been mesmerized by the flashy lights and superficial messages. So-

Is this poem more relevant, less relevant, or just as relevant today. Explain.

9. Look at the title and how each and every stanza ends. Consulting your notes, what technique is the author using?

10. This question is a gimme. Which version of the poem below do you like the best? No right or wrong answer, just need an explanation for your opinion. Both versions reached Number 1, about 50 years apart.

Bonus-Share below a link to a song that reflect our current situation.

    1. You are on the right track, and so very close to finding the right term. Check the class notes, which I also linked just beneath the poem.

  11. First 5 questions. Some wonderful answers, thank you. If you are still a little confused, below is from Ayla as an example, well done Ayla.
1.The object is darkness and the author is saying “Hello darkness, my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you once again.” Meaning that the darkness was like a person.
    2. I think the Oxymoron is “sound of silence” because you can’t hear silence.
    3. The object is the neon light and the author says, “When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light.” Meaning that the light would be able to stab him.
    4. The object is the light and the author is saying, “And in the naked light I saw…” meaning that light could be naked.
    5. I think that the people are “alone”. I think this because in the song it says, “People talking without speaking.” And “people hearing without listening.” Which means that people are not actually talking since they are not speaking and, you can’t hear people if you’re not listening. And even though people are surrounded by other people can still be lonely emotionally since nobody is talking or listening.

  12. Which song do you prefer?
From Kris-I like the second version better because I prefer the voice f the person better in the second one. Also the backround music is better in the second one.
Griffin-disturbed was better it had a better tempo and mood for the poem.
TylerThe cover by Disturbed is better in my opinion because they both have
emotion but the cover has more. With the build up of intesity and the vocals getting louder
and then it ending with the original intensity makes it better.
Justin-i like the one by simon and garfunkel becuase tis more catchy
Sophia-The version I like the best is the second one. The second version, in my opinion, has a more beautiful musical arrangement. Furthermore, second one has a more instrumental sound, which I like. The second version also has a very interesting music video to go with it. Therefore, I like the second version best.
Nika-I like the original version better because it matches the poem better.
Zuri-I prefer the original because its faster and to me the tone in his voice sounds better with the mood of the song.
Liam- I think the first version is way better, it’s more calmed and smooth, but apose to the second version is so loud and gloomy. The first one lets me think about what the poem is saying, but the second one I can barely understand, it’s just sounds more sad then necessary.
Ethan-i like the first one because its less creepy and it sounds more like a song if that makes sense.

    1. From Katrina-I like the first version better than the second one. I say this because I only got half way through the first stanza in the second version. The reason is because it was very boring. I was really into the first version right away and wanted to listen until the end. The second one I feel wasn’t connecting to the actual poem itself.

  13. Again, some excellent answers for 6-10. Marks and commnets are in powerschool. Here are Kris's answers to help out if you are still confused. Well Done Kris!6. Silence like a cancer grows. Simile is comparing two things and is usually done through the word like, so this is a simile because it's comparing silence and growth of cancer through like.
7.And echoed in the wells of silence. It's impossible to echo in silence.
    8. The poem is as relevant today because a lot of people don't listen to you and the actually good advice that you are giving them and you are jus ignored and thats what happened nowadays too.
    9. The technique that is used is repetition because the word silence is repeated at the end of each stanza.
    10. I like the second version better because I prefer the voice f the person better in the second one. Also the backround music is better in the second one.
